A semicolon ( ; ) is a conventional punctuation mark with several uses, mainly for pauses in sentences and breaks in lists. The Italian printer Aldus Manutius the Elder established the practice of using the semicolon mark to separate words of opposed meaning, and to indicate interdependent statements. The earliest, general use of the semicolon in English was in 1591; Ben Jonson was the first notable English writer to use them systematically.

I have often been confused about the right way to use a comma in a list. Leaving out the comma before the and in the last item always felt wrong but I was taught that it was the correct way. I thought that I had read that the comma could be used there, it makes sense to me as it helps clarify the meaning in most cases and generally has a more natural cadence, but most references on the subject seemed to agree with what I had been taught, and that there was no other way
