Leaving out the comma before the and in the last item always felt wrong but I was taught that it was the correct way. I thought that I had read that the comma could be used there, it makes sense to me as it helps clarify the meaning in most cases and generally has a more natural cadence, but most references on the subject seemed to agree with what I had been taught, and that there was no other way
